One of the most exciting parts of a home renovation is getting to pick out all the finishes, but it can also be one of the most overwhelming. Flooring, cabinetry, countertops, lighting, hardware, paint colors… the list feels endless. Our Design Engagement Specialists are trained to assist with selecting all of the necessary materials needed for your project. You can rely on their know-how to guide the experience and help to make the process effortless.
Over the years, we’ve learned a few ways to make the selection process less stressful and a lot more enjoyable.
Start with a Vision
Before you begin the design process, know the “feel” you’re going for. Are you dreaming of something modern and sleek? Warm and cozy? Bright and timeless? Having a style direction makes every decision that follows much easier. Think of it like setting your GPS before you start driving.
Function First, Pretty Second
Of course we all want things to look beautiful but a gorgeous countertop won’t feel so special if it stains the first time you spill wine. Same with flooring: that hand-scraped hardwood might look stunning, but if you’ve got three kids and a dog, it might not be your best friend. Start by asking, How will we use this space? and then choose materials that fit your lifestyle.
Big Choices First, Details Later
Start with the big pieces like cabinetry, flooring, and countertops. Once the major items are selected, the pieces of the puzzle fit together easily. You can then begin to layer in lighting, hardware, and paint. It’s much easier to match the smaller details to the big ones than the other way around.
Pick Your Splurges
You don’t need to go high-end on every single thing. Decide where you want to make a statement — maybe it’s a dramatic backsplash or a stunning light fixture. Balance the statement piece(s) with more budget-friendly choices elsewhere. A few smart splurges can make the whole space feel elevated.
Trust the Process (and Yourself)
There’s no shortage of opinions when you’re renovating. Friends, family, Pinterest, Instagram — everyone and everything has ideas. But remember, this is your home. Trust your gut, trust your design team, and know that it doesn’t have to be “perfect” to be beautiful. At the end of the day, making selections is about creating a home that feels like you. If you approach it with a little planning, a sense of priority, and a willingness to enjoy the process, you’ll end up with a space you love living in.
