The Story
This wasn’t the homeowners’ first project with us. After finishing an exterior project together, they were ready to bring that same attention indoors, starting with a mudroom area that had never quite worked, more of a breezeway passthrough than a functional space, plus a powder room that needed more than a finishes refresh.
The scope came together around three connected needs. A real mudroom for coats, shoes, and laundry. A dedicated wash station for the family dog, so muddy paws never had to touch the rest of the house. And a powder room expansion, since the existing footprint was too tight to actually renovate well. At just over $70,000, the project turned an underused space into three distinct, purpose-built rooms that all work together.
The Transformation
- Cabinetry: Custom mudroom cabinetry in a soft sage green, with a tall built-in cubby and hook wall, closed storage, and a butcher block-topped bench for seating.
- Mudroom bench: A natural wood butcher block top, stained in field, over two drawers for everyday storage.
- Dog wash station: A fully tiled wash stall with white subway tile walls, a hexagon mosaic tile floor and niche, a matte black hand shower and valve trim, and a built-in tiled step with a quartz cap edge, giving the family a dedicated place to rinse off before heading into the rest of the house.
- Hardware: Matte black knobs and pulls throughout the mudroom cabinetry, paired with matte black double-prong hooks (six hanging points total) for coats and bags.
- Flooring: Large-format beige tile in the laundry and mudroom, with a coordinating hexagon mosaic at the dog wash base.
- Laundry: A stacked washer and dryer built into the cabinetry run, with a dedicated dryer vent and a toe-kick heater to keep the space comfortable.
- Powder room vanity: An expanded footprint with a new dark wood vanity, quartz countertop, and an oval mirror.
- Powder room lighting: A two-light vanity sconce with clear glass globes for a classic, schoolhouse-inspired look.
- Walls: Beadboard wainscoting carried through both the mudroom and powder room, with a soft green textured wallpaper above the wainscoting in the powder room.
- Doors: A soft-close, six-panel pocket door with an oil-rubbed bronze pull connects the mudroom to the living room without swinging into either space.

Why move from an exterior project to interior work?
Once the outside of the home was taken care of, the mudroom and powder room were the two spaces the homeowners actually used every day that still weren’t working for them. It’s common for exterior and interior projects to happen in phases like this, tackling the home’s biggest priorities one at a time rather than all at once.
Why expand the powder room instead of just updating its finishes?
The existing footprint was too tight to renovate well on its own. Since the adjoining mudroom was already being reframed, expanding the powder room at the same time added modest cost but meaningfully improved how the space actually functions, rather than putting new finishes into the same cramped layout.
Why build in a dedicated dog wash station?
A mudroom this well-used needed somewhere to manage muddy paws and gear coming in from outside, not just hooks and cubbies. A fully tiled wash stall keeps that mess contained to one washable space instead of a bathtub or shower elsewhere in the house.
